Maryland to jail speeders?

Excessive speed and reckless driving is on the increase. Here in New Hampshire, the number of over 100mph citations is growing.

The US state of Maryland has a new law that takes effect in 2025 that increases penalties for reckless and aggressive driving. Among other things, driving 30mph or more above the posted limit can potentially lead to up to 60 days in jail, fines, and points on your license.

Here are some of the details:

  • 30+ mph over the posted limit has been deemed reckless driving
  • Up to 60 days in jail
  • Speeding in work zone fines can be up to $1,000 by exceeding the limit by 40mph or more

You can read the Maryland bill, also called the “Sergeant Patrick Kepp Act” here. Here is some local news coverage about this new law.

Do you think this “stick” approach will help reduce speed? Are more “carrot” approaches needed as well? What could those be?

Be well, and Don’t Drive Like an Ash!
